The sonnet below would have been me a few years ago, before God hammered the round peg of faith into my square head.

The desert's really good for me

(give a moment, do not scoff)

for it's there that I can see

trouble coming from a long way off

and thus prepare pain of my own

that wind's sower reaps the storm,

but it's bad down to the bone

that violence must be the norm,

and I long (a bit) for leafy places,

where flying grit ain't in my beard;

is it too late to seek the graces

promised when the Christ appeared,

or am I days or years too late,

and set upon my dusty fate?
